Ehr-Jung TSAI’s farther was one of the few remaining artisans of the paper-made joss in Taiwan. Tsai used to work in the technology industry. He has carried on the artistic legacy of his father. He engages himself in the craft art with history traceable back to more than a thousand years ago.

Tsai uses bamboo paper as the basic material. After several handmade procedures, for example, shaping, drying in the shade, trimming, adjusting the shape, coloring, painting, shaping and assembling, Tsai creates the Chinese paper dolls and josses.

In addition to that, he also develops exquisite cultural and creative commercial products, such as pen holders, letter openers and masks. Tsai is the most skillful artist in bamboo paper creations and arts around the world.

 

Introduction of works(Five groups)

 Bamboo Paper Statue of the Goddess “Mazu”

The artpiece combines Chinese paper craft of 1500-year-old tradition with the Mazu worship in Taiwan. The exhibition centers on the paper statue of the Goddess Mazu. And there will be a smaller scale of paper-made works on display.

Bamboo Paper Masks

The combination of bamboo and paper, unique in Chinese culture, creates legendary expressions of bamboo and paper craft. It adopts traditional materials in response to today’s eco-friendly trend.

Various masks are emblematic for the Chinese culture, for example, the “spirit of the dragon and the horse,” the “warrior king of Lanling,” and the “Monkey King metamorphosis into the Bull Devil King” based on Chinese classics Journey to the West.

Bookmarks and Letter openers

The works uses characters from traditional Chinese narratives, for example, the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and the Journey to the West, to create a series of characteristic bookmarks and letter openers.

Pen Holders

The works figurates religious characters in Taiwan, for example, the Sheriff of the Underworld. The work puts multiple cultures on display.

Handmade Bamboo Hairpin

In Taiwan, bamboo is an emblematic plant. It is meaningful and has a symbolic character within Chinese culture. It symbolizes being purity and modesty in traditional Chinese literature. The pronunciation of bamboo in Chinese shares phonic similarity with the word “wish”. Thus it also carries the meaning of blessing.
